Two missense mutations within the cationic trypsinogen gene, R122H and N29I (older nomenclature

and N21I) cause the majority of cases of HP.2022 Therefore, it had been hypothesized that an inappropriate activation of pancreatic zymogens (either by the prevention of trypsin inactivation, or by an enhanced activation of trypsinogen or by both mechanisms) might also play a role in alcoholic pancreatitis and that alcoholic pancreatitis might have the same genetic background as HP.
